Title :  Consultant for Journalist Strengthening Course on Gender Sensitive Media
Duty Station :  Jakarta, Indonesia
Report to :  Program Manager We Lead
Timeline :  March – June 2022

Background
Women's Voice and Leadership (WVL) is a multi-year project initiated by Hivos Southeast Asia (hereinafter: Yayasan Hivos) and Just Associates (JASS), and supported by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), starting from 2019 until 2023. The goal of the project is improved enjoyment of human rights by women and girls and the advancement of gender equality in Indonesia. To implement the project, Yayasan Hivos and JASS collaborate with five (5) women's rights organizations (5 WROs) with strong legitimacy among their constituencies and the broader community: Rahima, Fahmina, Rumah KitaB, Perempuan Mahardhika, and FAMM Indonesia.

Media plays a crucial role in supporting knowledge production, leading to discourse and cultural shape. Yet, women's representation in the media is still limited, including in Indonesia. The Center of the Data and Analysis of Tempo's research from August to September 2018 found limited space for women in the media editor and less gender-sensitive towards women. Limited number and role as a resource person in the media is only 11% compared to men with amount 89%.

Shrinking women's space in the media remains, affecting the media not being able to be also a safe space for women. Discrimination and exploitation towards women and the marginalized group remain high in the news coverage. According to the Independent Journalist Alliance (AJI), also clearly stated that the media coverage remains to exploit and discriminate against sexual violence victims. As an example, the absence of the gender lens of journalists in analyzing and framing news in the media keeps objectifying the women and revictimizing the violent victim. Sexism media coverage remains high without adhering to the journalism ethic, dignity, and gender-equality lens.

On the other side, gender lens is essential to analyze journalist perspective to produce and present the factual and equal, without discriminating women and marginalized groups.
The We Lead program attempts to produce and distribute gender-equal narratives to claim and expand the digital space for women and marginalized groups through the strengthening of the young women journalist course. Furthermore, it supports building comprehensive knowledge that fills the gender gap and positively impacts gender issues in the media.
