BACKGROUND
Organizational Context
Yayasan Emas Artisanal Indonesia (YEAI) is an Indonesian foundation and the local affiliate of the Artisanal Gold Council (AGC), a not-for-profit organization based out of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada dedicated to the sustainable development of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities in the developing world. The AGC helps to improve the global gold sector by promoting better practices in ASGM through technology transfer, policy development and awareness raising in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The AGC consists of a core staff, associates and a council of experts (Board of Directors) in areas of ASGM, economics, sustainable development, social responsibility, human and environmental health, and gold production and extraction. Project Description
The SD-ASGM project is a five-year project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). It is being implemented by the AGC/YEAI in partnership with the Government of Republic of Indonesia (GoI) and Lentera Kartini with the support of GAC. The direct beneficiaries of the project include men and women gold miners, stakeholders in the responsible gold supply chain, and government actors at national and subnational levels. The project is known locally as Program Emas Rakyat Sejahtera, or “PERS”.
The project aims to improve livelihoods (incomes, health, and environment) of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the ASGM economy in proposed target areas in Central Kalimantan and North Sulawesi Indonesia. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying and implementing behavioral and technical alternatives to mercury use. The project also supports targeted provincial governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. The project is built upon three pillars: (1) Direct intervention through improved practices and education, including the construction of a mercury-free gold processing facility in three project areas; (2) enhanced institutional and policy support for responsible ASGM activities; and (3) increased trade of responsible artisanal gold from Indonesian ASGM communities via formal supply chains. The third pillar includes establishing collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives that promote responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy. This initiative supports the GOI’s implementation of the Minamata Convention on mercury, which both Canada and Indonesia signed in 2013. As part of the first pillars, AGC/YEAI have developed 3 (three) Mercury-Free Gold Processing facilities in the project areas. The facilities have been operated as a learning and research center, and planned to be handed over to the selected project beneficiaries.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Mineral Processing Engineer is focused on improving ore processing systems for the ASGM sector. He/she will assist the AGC/YEAI in designing, improving, providing maintenance, building, installing, and operating/training mineral processing systems with a focus on mercury-free high recovery systems. He/she will also assist the AGC/YEAI in conducting exploratory visits to various ASGM sites to determine the viability of sites for AGC/YEAI’s project. The Mineral Processing Engineer is also required to be engaged with the community by leading the holistic engagement of ASGM communities and will take part in the implementation of comprehensive approaches that the AGC/YEAI develops.
TASKS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Mineral Processing Engineer is expected to undertake the following tasks and possess the following knowledge, willingness or experience:
1. Monitoring, operating, designing, calibrating, installing, performing maintenance process equipment and optimizing crushing, grinding, and classification systems;
2. Experience or knowledge in collecting representative ore samples and sending to lab for analysis;
3. Ability to perform mass balances and plotting PSDs, grade recovery curves;
4. Knowledge or experience in gravimetric processing and lixiviation;
5. Interested and passionate in working with local communities in small-scale gold mining and other stakeholders, e.g. non-governmental organizations, etc.;
6. Interested in working with local, provincial and national government in mining and related issues to mining, e.g. health, environment, etc.;
7. Willingness to live in the project sites; A university degree in mining or metallurgy is preferred but not required;
8. Willingness to travel to various provinces and sites in Indonesia is required;
9. Able to communicate and report in English while working with AGC Canada’s technical team;
10. Good interpersonal skills, open to challenges and enthusiastic.
